The beginnings of the MUCA collection date back to 1998. The MUCA's permanent collection offers over a quarter of a century of insights into the most important representatives of contemporary art of the 21st century. Today, the MUCA collection includes important works by artists from the fields of urban and contemporary art. It comprises over 1,200 objects and works, of which selected exhibits are already on display in the Anniversary exhibition "25 Years were to be seen.
Parts of the collection have been "touring" Asia for two years and are exhibited in selected co-operating museums in Japan and Korea.
From 2 January 2026, highlights from the collection will once again be on display in Munich. With the support of the State Office for the Non-State Museums in Bavarianew rooms for the MUCA permanent exhibition were created in the basement of the main building.
The core collection comprises artists who became known in the 2000s. Back then, many of these artists were up-and-coming newcomers. Today, we can proudly say that they are established, international figures in the contemporary art world. Many of them were influenced by various movements ranging from pop art and figurative painting to graffiti and socio-political art.
MUCA is a leading authority in collection building and houses important artworks by artists known for using the urban landscape as part of their working process. Our long-standing passion for collecting and unique position has enabled us to exhibit works from this seismic movement that have captured the imagination of millions of people around the world.
In the course of the museum's development, we have expanded the collection to include important international artists from the last 25 years. The focus is on placing these artists and those already represented in our collection in the wider context of contemporary art in the 21st century.
Since the museum's beginnings, it has always been our aim to share the collection with the public. On the one hand as a permanent exhibition on site in our MUCA Museum in Hotterstraße, and on the other hand with exhibition concepts that are shown in co-operating museums worldwide.
Another aim is to make our collection available digitally and therefore free of charge and barrier-free. This is achieved with a virtual insight into selected works on this page, as well as through our Free MUCA Museum App.
