ICONS OF URBAN ART

Street art is omnipresent. Though impossible to ignore, it’s not always viewed favourably. Street art confronts us fearlessly, unexpectedly and directly. An intensive engagement with art in public space demands of us deeper self-reflection and a closer look at the societies we shape.

Street artists appropriate urban infrastructure as a canvas to communicate grievances and alert us to unacceptable social conditions. Their unique sense for fleeting aesthetics makes them pioneers of one of the most visionary contemporary art movements. Each artwork has a story.

The exhibition Icons of Urban Art aims to bring street and urban art into the contemporary sphere with impressive original artworks, including one of Banksy’s biggest oil paintings, “Are You Using That Chair?” – a subversion of Edward Hopper’s famous ‘Nighthawks’.
